Independent people needed to check on standards of councillors

Warwickshire County Council and partners at Solihull Metropolitan, Nuneaton and Bedworth and Rugby borough councils are seeking experienced people to act as independent consultants to ensure the highest standards of conduct among elected local politicians.

The councils are looking for people with an interest in ensuring the highest standards of public life to oversee allegations of misconduct among their members and those of local parish councils.  The person’s duties could also include consulting with the members who are the subject of allegations of misconduct.

Although not a member of any of the local authorities’ committees that deal with matters of conduct, the views of the independent person must be taken into account before making any decision on an issue of member conduct that it has investigated.

New arrangements following the abolition of the Standards Board for England require local authorities to appoint at least one ‘independent person’ to advise on matters of councillor conduct and ethics.

Although the position is voluntary, reasonable travel expenses will be paid.  Interested parties can receive an application pack by calling Jane Pollard, Warwickshire County Council’s Corporate Legal Services Manager on 01926 412565 or downloaded at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/democracy
