The Expo was organised by Warwickshire County Council as part of the Going for Growth initiative, which seeks to support and encourage business and employment growth in the county.
It took place at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre, near Leamington Spa at the end of March, and showcased a selection of the leading companies and organisations in the county, with exhibitors including sponsor Jaguar Land Rover, Alstom, Codemasters, Telent, Triton Showers and MIRA.
The event featured seminars over two days, careers focused on the Thursday and business focused on the Friday. Together at one location in the county, it was a great opportunity for people to access all of this information in one place.
A selection of these seminars are now available to view online via Youtube. Careers themed talks are online at http://wip.warwickshire.gov.uk/thursday-seminars/ and would be of particular interest to parents and young people, as well as schools, for use in careers education and guidance. Additionally, seminars with a business focus can be watched online at http://wip.warwickshire.gov.uk/friday-seminars/.
The event helped local people to gain an insight into the range of companies in the county and get behind closed doors to see what it is exactly that they do. The companies were joined by many of the local colleges, training providers and Coventry University and the University of Warwick, who also exhibited.
Apprenticeships were well represented, with Tim Kyte of the MTC and Ken Marshall of National Apprenticeships Service talking about vocational opportunities on the Thursday. Apprentice Jack Coleman and graduate engineer Stacie Tibos talked about their experiences of working for Rugby based Alstom and were especially well received by their young audience.
There were also specially prepared seminars from Leamington Spa based Altair, Henley in Arden’s REPL Consulting, Rugby’s manufacturer Automotive Insulations and more general careers advice from the careers service CSWP Ltd and Sian Case of nailthatjob.com.
The second day of the event was for business to business networking, and a strong programme included a session on future-proofing from keynote speaker Patrick Harris, formerly director of Creaticity at mobile company Orange. Also on the agenda was ‘Exporting is not Exclusive’ by Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce; ‘Warwickshire’s World-class Strengths – how we can attract the jobs and businesses of the future’ by Breeze Strategy; ‘Selling to Warwickshire County Council/ Broadband Update’ by Warwickshire County Council; as well as seminars from the University of Warwick based WMG, the Design Council and Jaguar Land Rover’s Les Ratcliffe.
Monica Fogarty, Strategic Director for Communities at Warwickshire County Council, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for those who were unable to attend the Expo to catch up with the careers guidance and business insight that was provided by local businesses at their fantastic seminars.”
