Double silver for National School Meals Week

County Caterers and Bidford Primary receive their silver awards

Warwickshire County Caterers and a South Warwickshire Primary School are celebrating double silver for their healthy food achievements.

Bidford-on-Avon C.ofE. Primary School was chosen as the location for Warwickshire County Caterers to receive the Soil Association’s prestigious Food for Life Silver Catering Mark during National School Meals week from (4-8 November).  The mark recognises County Caterers’ commitment to serving freshly prepared meals, using seasonal, local and organic ingredients, which are free from harmful additives and better for animal welfare.

The Catering Mark also helps individual schools on their way to achieving Food for Life Partnership (FFLP) Awards – and Bidford Primary were delighted to be presented with their own silver award in recognition of a good food culture where cooking, growing and farm visits are embedded in the school curriculum.

Food for Life Partnership Local Programme Manager, Nigel Baker, said: “We are delighted that the County Caterers have achieved the Silver Catering Mark. As we have seen with Bidford Primary, I am sure this will inspire more schools to enrol with the Food for Life Partnership, a national programme that offers clear educational and health benefits to pupils.”

To mark the occasion school staff, caterers and Soil Association representatives joined children for a celebration school lunch from the new award-winning winter menu.

The menu will be served to children aged four to 11 across the county from 11 November.

Sandra Russell, Head of Catering at Warwickshire County Caterers, said: “National School Meals Week aims to showcase all that’s great about school meals and so we were delighted to join Bidford Primary to celebrate both our own and their silver achievement.”

“Our Soil Association Silver Catering Mark assures parents that their children are getting a healthy, appetising meal to see them through the school day – and we would encourage all children to try a hot meal from our new menu, especially now it’s getting colder.”

Dishes from the new winter menu include Organic Beef Meatballs, Barbecue Glazed Chicken Tortillas, Vegetable Burritos and traditional favourites such as British Roast Beef and Yorkshire Puddings and British Quality Pork Sausages.

Warwickshire County Caterers serve around 3 million healthy, nutritious lunches at 175 infant, primary and Special Educational Needs Schools and 20 nursery schools across Warwickshire.
