Be a Deer – Support Oisin for top museum mascot

Oisin the Deer, the official mascot for Warwickshire County Council’s Market Hall museum has been shortlisted for Kids Days Out ‘top museum mascot’.

Oisin the Deer, the skeletal remains of an extinct Giant Irish Deer who is on permanent display at Warwick’s Market Hall Museum, regularly curates on Twitter the many interesting finds and exhibitions at Warwickshire’s Heritage sites throughout the year. The National Kids Days Out website has shortlisted Oisin the Deer amongst 13 other museum mascots from around the country and Warwickshire County Council are encouraging residents to show their support for Oisin by voting for him to win.

To register your vote on Twitter simply tag @KidsDaysOutCoUk with the appropriate Oisin hashtag e.g #TeamOisin. All votes must include @KidsDaysOutCoUk or they will not be counted. They are also taking votes by email at info@kidsdaysout.co.uk with #TeamOisin as the email subject. Market Hall and St John’s Museums in Warwick are great venues to visit in Warwick over the Easter Break. Here are some of the interesting events taking place for children and young people:

The Great Fire of Warwick – Wednesday 1 April
Market Hall Museum
Discover the story of the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694, how it started and how the town was rebuilt. Follow our ‘Great Fire of Warwick’ trail.

Corsets to Camouflage – Thursday 2 April
St John’s Museum
Explore our costume collections, including the military uniforms belonging to the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum. Make a Roman toga, ‘make do and mend’ on the WWII Home Front, and recreate the psychedelic 60s with tie dye.

9.30 am – 4.00 pm. Cost: £24.00 a day. Book two or more days and get a 20% discount on the overall cost per child. Suitable for ages 6 -12 years. Bring packed lunch/snacks/drink. Activities start and finish at St John’s Museum but we may visit other sites. Places must be booked in advance by calling 01926 412132.

Rockin’ The Stone Age – Live! at Market Hall Museum, Warwick
Wednesday 1 April
10.30 am – 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm – 3.30 pm
Meet two Stone Age people from Discover History and find out about their adventures. It’s more than just flints, bronze and burial chambers… Discover life in Stone Age to Bronze Age times. Make a piece of ancient jewellery and a shield. Cost: £2.50 per child, no need to book, just drop in. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fabulous Fossils at Market Hall Museum, Warwick
Wednesday 8 April
10.30 am – 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm – 3.30 pm
Do you know your ammonites from your belemites? Explore some of Warwickshire Museum’s collection of fossils and discover creatures from the past. Get the chance to handle some fascinating Jurassic finds and decorate a wooden door hanger with fossil creatures.

As part of this event, the Fossil ID Roadshow will be taking place between 12.00 noon – 1.00 pm
Bring your fossil finds and our Curator of Natural Sciences, Jon Radley, will cast an eye over it and help to identify what it is! Cost: £2.50 per child, no need to book, just drop in. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Marvellous Medicines at St John’s Museum, Warwick
Friday 10 April 11.00 am – 3.00 pm
How did people keep well in the past? Come along and find out all about some traditional cures for all sorts of ills – and which remedies are still used today. Make a scented pomander to ward off bad smells! Cost: £2.50 per child, no need to book, just drop in. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
