Nostalgic displays mark Heritage Open Days weekend on 8 – 11 September.
“Warwickshire villages” will be the theme of displays in selected libraries around the county in September as part of Heritage Open Days weekend (8-11 September) and will stay up until the end of the month.
The displays of photographs and other materials will highlight how things have changed (or in some cases stayed the same) over the past 150 years in villages located around the largest local library in the area.
Atherstone, Coleshill, Leamington, Nuneaton and Rugby libraries have put together the displays from material held within the local studies collections. Displays include newspaper articles, photographs, books and materials; some of which has been donated in the past by members of the public.
Louise Essex, Senior Local Studies Librarian said, “Each year in September we create displays from our collections to highlight some of our key resources.
“We are hoping that customers will enjoy reminiscing, finding out something new, or helping us to put names to some of the people we haven’t been able to identify in the photographs.”
Customers are also welcome to borrow books from the accompanying book displays and staff will be able to help with any local history enquiries.
Portfolio Holder for Customers, Cllr Kam Kaur said: “The libraries participating in Heritage Open Days are providing a wonderful opportunity to engage with the history of Warwickshire villages. The displays highlight our archival resources whilst also presenting them in an appealing and informative way to the public.”
Chair of the Resources and Fire and Rescue Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Cllr Matt Western, added: “It is great to see our local libraries getting involved in Heritage Open Days. With so many local buildings, gardens and places of historic interest, opening their doors to everyone free of charge, the libraries’ displays will draw much deserved attention to our history and heritage.”
The displays can be seen in the above libraries during September and a larger display featuring boards from a wider area will be touring around all county-run libraries next year.
