Foster carers celebrated in Warwickshire

Warwickshire’s fostering service recently invited its foster carers to attend two events in Bedworth and Warwick to celebrate their involvement in looking after young people in Warwickshire. The aim of the events was to thank carers for their involvement in the recent internal review of the service and to provide feedback on the proposals to make the service more fit for the future.

The service has identified the need to make fostering for Warwickshire more attractive, feasible and financially viable to carers, with the aim of recruiting an additional 60 new placements for children in care in the county by 31 March 2020. There is currently a national shortage of foster carers, with 736 ‘looked after’ children in Warwickshire but only 327 foster carers to look after them.

The events also provided carers with useful information about the support services available to them such as the placement hub, psychological support, the new annual review process, training opportunities, the multi-agency safeguarding hub, ‘missing children’ and child sexual exploitation (CSE) support services and targeted support for young people.

One carer at the event said “Fostering for Warwickshire gives me opportunities to provide a child with the chance to make the most of their potential and gives me support, training and help to do this.”

Cllr Les Caborn, Portfolio Holder for Health said “It is fantastic to see so many of our foster carers involved in the future of our fostering service where they can all make a real difference to our young people in Warwickshire. We still need to recruit more foster carers by 2020 so I urge anyone interested in fostering to contact the fostering service and find out more.”

Cllr Dave Parsons, Chair of the Children & Young People Overview & Scrutiny Committee said “We are making substantial changes to our fostering service to make it more viable for carers and to improve the level of support we offer to carers and the young people they look after. I hope more prospective foster carers come forward to find out about fostering as a result.”
