Warwickshire County Council has announced that an alternative venue has been secured to provide library services following the temporary closure of Stratford-upon-Avon Library.
Alternative arrangements will be provided from MarketSpace within the same building at the ArtsHouse on Rother Street. The temporary library space will open on 6 February.
Stratford-upon-Avon Library has closed temporarily from its current location at Henley Street for building works last Friday (20 January), and will remain closed until summer 2017.
The building will undergo a refurbishment on the ground floor, offering an improved look and longer opening hours. Essential maintenance works, including heating pipework and electrical work, will also be carried out at the same time,
The refurbishment at Henley Street will also create an improved location for Registration Services, which is currently housed at Winton House.
The temporary Rother Street site, provided by Stratford Town Trust, will offer most of the services normally available from the library including an extra, free service to request any items – such as books, DVDs or audiobooks – that are available in the Warwickshire County Council stock.
Other services on offer will include free public access to two computers and free WiFi, free Rhymetime and Storystomp sessions, daily newspapers and the concessionary travel service. Opening hours will remain the same with works scheduled to be completed in summer 2017.
Cllr Kam Kaur, portfolio holder for customer services, said: “It was always the intention of the county council to provide an alternative venue for library services in Stratford and we have worked very hard to secure this.
“The county council is very grateful to the Town Trust for the way in which they worked with us to enable this arrangement.
“The work that is to be done on Stratford Library is absolutely essential but customers can be assured of an improved look when it reopens, as well as longer opening hours. While we appreciate the change of location is inconvenient, we trust that the improved library will make it worthwhile.”
Justin Williams, Chief Executive of Stratford Town Trust, said: “Ensuring library services remained available to all in Stratford was hugely important – and we are very pleased we were able to step in and provide a venue.”
Cllr Matt Western, Chair of Resources Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said: “We appreciate how highly Stratford’s residents value their library and thank them for bearing with us as we make the temporary arrangements.”
