School holiday half term activities

A whole host of activities for youngsters have been organised for the February half term at Warwickshire’s country parks. Why not try making bird feeders ready for the Spring nesting season to help our feathered friends? Or maybe you fancy yourself as a bit of a Ray Mears; have a go at building a shelter at Kingsbury. There will be a limited number of places available for all these events so book yours early to avoid disappointment.

WEDNESDAY 15 FEBRUARY

Toddler Trundle at Ryton Pools Country Park

A weekly event for the tiniest of tiddlers! Leaf fun, stories, mud pies and collecting treasures will be among some of our activities designed for the smallest naturalists.  After the walk and activities, head back to The Courtyard Café for refreshments (extra cost for refreshments, exclusive reduced-price Toddler Trundle menu available). A quarterly programme is available from the visitor centre giving activity details for each week.

Time: 10am to 11am.     

Meet: The Visitor Centre Courtyard  

Cost: £2.50 per toddler (excluding refreshments).

SATURDAY 18 FEBRUARY TO SUNDAY 26 FEBRUARY

February Half Term Fun Trail at Ryton Pools Country Park

Join in this half term and follow the half term fun trail around the park – fun for all the family. Collect your trail sheet from the visitor centre.

Cost: £2.00 per trail sheet.

SUNDAY 19 FEBRUARY

Natural Bird Feeders at Kingsbury Water Park

Join the Rangers to create bird feeders using a range of natural materials.

Time: Drop in anytime between 10.30am and 12pm.   

Meet: The Information Centre.

Cost: £2.00 per person.

MONDAY 20 FEBRUARY

Make a Rain Catcher at Kingsbury Water Park.

Drop in to make a simple rain catcher from recycled materials. Take it home and measure how much rain falls where you live! An event for children aged 5 years and over.

Time: Drop in anytime between 11am and 1pm.

Meet: The Information Centre.

Cost: £2.00 per child.

TUESDAY 21 FEBRUARY

Birdy Bistro at Kingsbury Water Park

Make some ‘delicious’ food for the birds in your garden. Be prepared to get messy!  A family event.

Time: Drop in anytime between 11am and 1pm.   

Meet: The Information Centre.

Cost: £2.00 per child.

TUESDAY 21 FEBRUARY

Pine Cone Feeders at Ryton Pools Country Park

Come and get messy and have a go at making your own pine cone feeder to feed the birds in your garden during the colder weather! Learn a little about the birds visiting your garden and have a peak out of our windows to see who’s on our feeders. Wrap up warm as we will make them outside and you may get messy!

Time: 11.30am to 12.30pm.

WEDNESDAY 22 FEBRUARY

Dens and Marshmallows at Kingsbury Water Park

Join us to build a den from natural materials and then toast some marshmallows over a small fire. An event for children aged 5 years and above, who must be accompanied by an adult. Wear old clothes – you will get muddy and dirty! Marshmallows are not vegetarian.

Time: 10.30am to 12pm.   

Meet: The Education Centre.

Cost: £3.50 per child.

Fantastic Felted Mini-Beast Workshop at Ryton Pools Country Park

Come and make your favourite insect or mini-beast with felt artist, Ursula Westwood.  Learn this specialist craft and have lots of fun making felt with wool, soap and water!  All resources and materials supplied. Visit www.ursulawestwood.com for more information about felt making. Please wear old clothes as you may get messy! Suitable for children aged 5 plus who must be accompanied by an adult.

THURSDAY 23 FEBRUARY

Bird Boxes at Ryton Pools Country Park

Make a nest box for this year’s nesting birds. Find out fascinating facts about these birds and where the best place to put up your nest box is. Take a look around the courtyard using our homes trail sheet, along with our bird watching specialist ranger, to see who lives where. Up to two children can make one box between them. Suitable for children aged 5 to 12 years who must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a hammer!

Time: 11am to 12.30pm.

FRIDAY 24 FEBRUARY

Campfire and Dens at Ryton Pools Country Park

Come and have some fun discovering how to design and build your own woodland shelter that’s camouflaged, big enough for your team and waterproof … ish!  The rangers will be on hand to provide tips, materials and help. When all the shelters are built we will light a small fire and toast some marshmallows. An event for children aged from 3 years, who must be accompanied by an adult. Children under 5 will need adult supervision during the activity.

Time: 11am to 12.30pm.

SUNDAY 26 FEBRUARY

Woodland Management at Hartshill Hayes Country Park

A walk through the woods with a ranger to see how past woodland management compares to that of present day. Please wear strong suitable footwear and wet weather clothing if needed.

Time: 10.30am to 12pm.     

Meet: The Tea Kiosk.  

Cost: Adults £3.50, Concessions £2.00, Family £8.00 (max 2 adults and 2 children)
