Warwickshire School News: Avon Valley students are off to see the wizard

Seven budding performers from The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College have been cast, and are set to feature, in Five Star Theatre’s production ‘The Wizard of Oz’ which will take to the stage at Rugby’s Benn Hall in March 2017.

Rugby theatregoers will be able to see the seven Avon Valley students when they don their costumes and join the 45-strong cast which is made of local performers at Benn Hall. The audience will watch Dorothy as she ‘follows the yellow brick road’, with her dog Toto, in an attempt to make it back to Kansas. Along the way Dorothy will meet a scarecrow in search of a brain, a tinman without a hear and a cowardly lion. These character, along with Glinda the Good Witch all help Dorothy to avoid the Wicked Witch who wants Dorothy’s magic slippers.

The magical performance features: Tom Wood a Year 11 student, Year 10 student Emily Gyles and Year 7 students Emily Melia, Gracie Burcham, Sam Downey, Isabella Awang and Teagan Nuttall.

Ethan J Smith, founder of Five Star Theatre and director/producer of the show, said, “It’s been an interesting and exciting experience, rehearsing this musical classic. We have a very large and hardworking cast of talented young performers, who are looking forward to taking to the stage next month. Running for just two performances, this theatrical experience is not something to be missed.”

Alison Davies, Headteacher, said, “It is wonderful to see a number of our students getting involved in this performance of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, with a local theatre company. Every student at our school has the opportunity to learn, and be involved, in dance, drama and music lessons and it is great to see that these students are involved in performing arts outside of school. I wish them all the best for what should be a super show.”

The Wizard of Oz takes to the stage on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd March, 7.30pm both nights. Tickets are £12.00, with a concessionary rate of £10.00 for children and seniors. Tickets can be purchased from the Benn Hall website (www.bennhall.com) or by calling the Box Office on 01788 533719. Tickets can also be booked in person at the Benn Hall.
