One of Warwick’s landmark buildings is set to be conserved and protected for use by future generations following approval last week from Warwick District Council’s planning committee.
The Old Shire Hall is a Grade I listed building on Northgate Street, owned by Warwickshire County Council. The landmark building has been a focal point and place where people have congregated in Warwick for more than 250 years, and was previously home to Warwick Crown Court until it relocated to Leamington in 2010.
Last year the county council announced plans to operate The Old Shire Hall as a premier hospitality venue and a premises licence was granted by Warwick District Council in September 2016.
The county council has since submitted a planning application for listed building consent to enable internal and external works to take place to facilitate the use of the building as an events venue. Additionally a change of use application was also submitted. At last Tuesday evening’s planning committee, both permissions were granted.
Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Finance and Property, said: “ The county council, as custodian of this wonderful building, is committed to the future preservation of The Old Shire Hall. By operating the building in this way it will have a sustainable future, generate the income required to maintain a Grade I listed building, and will make a lasting contribution to Warwick’s economy. This unique and historic asset deserves to be experienced by as many people as possible and we hope that by operating the building for elegant events and significant occasions such as weddings, award dinners and civic ceremonies we can do just that.”
Cllr Matt Western. Chair of Warwickshire County Council’s Resources and Fire & Rescue Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said: “Finding new uses for former courtrooms has worked well around the country and we are delighted that the granting of planning permission allows us to move forward with our plans for The Old Shire Hall. We are committed to working in a way that respects both our neighbours and the heritage of our outstanding building.”
