Public urged to plan where they watch the Women’s Tour in North Warwickshire

With 50 days to go before the Women’s Tour 2017 reaches the Warwickshire stage on Friday June 9th, organisers are urging spectators to have a look at the route and plan where they watch from.

Racegoers in northern Warwickshire have the opportunity to watch the start of the race with riders leaving Atherstone’s Market Street at 10am before the start proper at 10.15 on the Birchley Heath Road.

Riders will then be taking the route along the Nuneaton Road towards Ansley, arriving there at around 10.18 before heading towards Fillongley with a scheduled arrival time of 10.30.

The riders then make their way towards the University of Warwick, which is a partner in the Warwickshire stage of the tour, and will make their way Warwickshire’s countryside and several towns before the race then culminates at the top of Royal Leamington Spa’s historic Parade.

There will be a range of activities in and around Atherstone as event organisers look to make the event a day to remember. Further details will be confirmed nearer the day and will be available at

Monica Fogarty, Joint Managing Director of Warwickshire County Council, said:

“When the Women’s Tour came through Warwickshire last year, it did so much to put the County on the map. Almost half of the spectators came from outside the County and generated a great deal of business for local shops, hotels and restaurants.

“But the Tour is also for the people of Warwickshire and we want our residents to have the opportunity to be part of a world-class event that has a global television audience. This notice of the route is a chance for people to have a look at the timetable and plan where they can best experience an amazing atmosphere.”

Race Director, Mick Bennett, said:

“The first ever Warwickshire stage last year was a huge success and we are determined that this year’s event will be even better. We are encouraging all fans to look at the maps and timings to plan their viewing to make the most of this fantastic, free-to-attend event. It will definitely be possible to see the stage two or three times, whether fans want to meet the riders at the Start in Atherstone, experience the race on the key SKODA Queen of the Mountains climbs, or enjoy the thrilling finish in Royal Leamington Spa.”

The University of Warwick is a partner for the Warwickshire stage of the tour and riders will pass through its world-class campus.

Professor Christine Ennew OBE, Registrar at the University of Warwick, said:

“Raising the profile of women’s sport is key to the University of Warwick’s commitment to promoting leading women as role models for our community, region and beyond and we are delighted to welcome the Women’s Tour back to our campus. From our foundation, the University of Warwick has been a positive driver of education, innovation, and cultural development throughout our region, and has shown the strongest commitment to providing equal opportunities for all. We look forward with anticipation to exciting, inspirational race.”
