Fire Service sign up to Dying to Work Charter!

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service (WFRS) have become the latest employer to sign up to TUC’s Charter for helping terminally ill workers

The aim of the ‘Dying to Work Voluntary Charter’ is to help employees who become terminally ill at work. WFRS are now following in the footsteps of employers such as E-On, Legal and General and the Co-op.

The Charter is part of the TUC’s wider “Dying to Work” campaign which is seeking greater security for terminally ill workers where they cannot be dismissed as a result of their condition.

Dying to Work was taken forward by the TUC following the case of Jacci Woodcook, a 59-year-old sales manager from Derbyshire, who was forced out of her job after being diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.

The TUC is asking employers to sign up to its voluntary charter to stop cases like Jacci’s happening in the future.

Talking about the Charter, Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, Rob Moyney said:

“I am really pleased to be signing the TUC Dying to Work Charter on behalf of Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service. Ensuring the health and wellbeing of our employees is at the heart of everything we do and by signing the charter, we are further enhancing that commitment to ensure that all of our employees have the security and peace of mind they need following a diagnosis of a terminal illness.”

Steven Rule, Warwickshire Brigade Secretary, FBU, said: “Being diagnosed with a terminal illness is something that most of us don’t want to even think about, but it is important to have safeguards in place. Any one of us could be diagnosed with a terminal illness at any point.

“Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service are only the third fire service in the country to have signed this Charter, this is extremely reassuring to its employees. We (the FBU) totally support this positive and humanitarian move which would provide individuals the dignity and security they deserve. I would urge all other fire and rescue services to follow suit.”

Lee Barron, Midlands TUC Regional Secretary, said: “It is great news that Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service have become the latest Fire Service in the UK to commit to the Dying to Work Charter. Worrying about your job should be the least of your concerns when you receive a terminal diagnosis.

“Over 330,000 workers across the UK are now covered by the Charter, a tremendous achievement in a little over a year since the first Charter was signed. There is real momentum behind the campaign as we work to secure the dignity and protection that all terminally ill workers deserve.

“We hope and expect more employers to follow Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service’s lead and sign the Charter as we take the campaign into more workplaces across Warwickshire, the West Midlands and, indeed, across the UK.”
