Catering Assistants, Supervisors and Cooks working for Educaterers in Warwickshire celebrated receiving their Level 2 NVQs in Food Production and Cooking at a special event recently, with two members of the team studying for additional modules to achieve an Apprenticeship.
Educaterers, who took over the provision of school meals to 195 schools from Warwickshire County Council in September, believes strongly in investing in the development of its team’s skills and worked with Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce Training to deliver and assess the training.
The successful team members started their NVQs in autumn 2015 and worked hard over the next 18 months to train in their units and complete the course.
They had to choose from 13 modules to study, ranging from maintaining a safe, hygienic and secure working environment, to producing a wide of range dishes and food products, to promoting new menu items and customer service. The choice of modules was influenced not only by their roles but also by the style of menus in the school kitchens that they work in.
The two members of staff that achieved an Apprenticeship – Deanna Crowther, who was Catering Supervisor at Emscote Infant School in Warwick and is now an Operations Supervisor; and Charlotte Jones, who is a Catering Assistant at Henry Hinde Infant School in Rugby – completed additional modules in employment rights and responsibilities, a functional skills qualification in mathematics and a Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles.

Educaterers launched as a Local Authority Traded Company – the first for Warwickshire County Council – in September.
Last month, primary schools across Warwickshire took part in national Food For Life Roast Dinner Day, enjoying a freshly prepared roast dinner with locally sourced ingredients thanks to Educaterers, who feed 125,000 pupils across the county every week.
