Fire service reminder to register white goods following Stratford kitchen fire!

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding residents to register appliances they buy or receive over the Christmas period following a lucky escape by a family in Stratford upon Avon.

Crews from Stratford and Alcester were alerted to the kitchen fire in Corelli Close at 7 pm on Saturday 9 December. Upon arrival firefighters found the property was heavily smoke logged due to the fire that was started by a faulty fridge freezer. The family had been alerted by their smoke alarm so were able to leave the property safely.

The fire was brought under control quickly, crews used breathing apparatus, hose and positive pressure ventilation fans to clear the smoke.

Community Fire Prevention & Arson Manager Moreno Francioso said:

“We’re expecting lots of people to either be given white goods for Christmas, or to snap up a bargain in the January sales. What people don’t realise is that faulty electrical items are a leading cause of fire; in 2015/16 almost 60% of house fires in Warwickshire involved electricity, this is why it is so important to register your appliances. You can do this quickly and easily online at registermyappliance.org.uk. Once a customer has registered their appliance, they will be notified of any safety repair or recall that is required.

“If the family had not had a working smoke alarm, we could have been looking at a very different story. Make sure you test your smoke alarms regularly, it only takes a moment to push that red button and can be the difference between life and death.”

Portfolio Holder for Fire and Community Safety Councillor Howard Roberts added:

“As we get nearer Christmas it’s more important than ever that residents ensure they take the advice of Warwickshire Fire and Rescue. By registering your appliances, you are taking steps to avoiding a devastating fire in your home. If you have any concerns about an appliance not running properly or making a funny noise don’t just ignore it; seek professional advice. Testing your smoke alarm takes seconds and is really important, as this example shows. Also, don’t be tempted to remove the batteries from smoke alarms to put in new toys and leave your family unprotected!

“We are really keen to ensure Warwickshire residents are safe over the festive period. If you’re worried for yourself or other vulnerable neighbours or family members, the best thing you can do is book a Safe and Well visit for your home”.
