For the first time ever, there will be an organised programme of celebration of International Women’s Day in Nuneaton and Bedworth. Community groups and organisations have come together with statutory agencies, voluntary and third sector groups to put together a series of events in the Borough – supporting this year’s theme of #PressforProgress.
Enthusiasm for celebrating International Women’s Day in the Borough has been so great that community events have actually started before the 8 March and will continue afterwards up until 22 March. There are 20 events in the programme calendar which are mostly open to all members of the public to take part and get involved. Men are invited just as much as women to take part and celebrate International Women’ Day! It’s about enjoying the events, motivating and uniting friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive. There’s also so much to find out about and celebrate about the role of women in the history of Nuneaton and Bedworth.
The planning of the celebrations commenced last summer when team members from Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action, the charity Grapevine and the Warwickshire County Council Localities and Partnerships Team in Nuneaton held a series of ‘Ideas Factories’ about International Women’s Day.
The response from communities with their ideas for different events has been huge with more and more community groups wanting to take part. For example you can visit drawings workshops with local artists at the Station Gallery and Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre; go to fitness, health checks and beauty treatment sessions at the Empire Gym & Studios; visit local Shepperton allotments to find out about ‘Ladies That Grow’.
There are coffee mornings at the Bedworth Heath Community Centre; netball taster sessions and you can be involved in PROCESSIONS – participate in a mass public artwork at Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery to prepare a work of art which is being prepared to celebrate the centenary of the Representation of the People Act – which gave the first women the right to vote.
Cllr Kam Kaur Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Customer and Transformation said:
“It is fantastic news that Nuneaton and Bedworth have an exciting programme of events taking place this year to celebrate International Women’s Day. The events which are mostly open to the public are a great way for the community to celebrate International Women’s Day and learn new skills together.”
An event booklet has been produced with information about these and much more. It is available free at community centres in Nuneaton and Bedworth, Nuneaton Library, Bedworth Library and the Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery. The booklet can be downloaded from the following link:
