First up is the OVO Energy Women’s Tour which takes place next Friday (15 June). The world’s top female racers are returning to Warwickshire for a record-breaking third year running.
Last year, OVO Energy Women’s Tour was a huge success throughout the whole of the county, with an estimated 95,000 spectators lining the streets.
A total of 312,000 people watched coverage from Stage 3 on ITV4 and it was broadcast in more than 100 countries, including every country in Europe for the first time. It is also estimated that more than £2million was generated during the Warwickshire stage in 2017.
The tour will weave its way through Warwickshire in a 151k route startin g at 10am in Atherstone and ending in Royal Leamington Spa – making the Warwickshire stage the longest of the 2018 event.
The race will feature 17 teams and 102 competitors are expected to start arriving in Leamington at around 2pm.
And this week saw the announcement that the OVO Energy Tour of Britain will also be coming to Warwickshire.
Racers from around the globe will descend on Warwickshire as it hosts the fourth stage of the tour, featuring top male riders, on Wednesday 5 September.
Starting in Nuneaton town centre, it will make its way around Warwickshire and end in Royal Leamington Spa, going through all five Warwickshire districts and boroughs.
Leader of Warwickshire County Council, Cllr Izzi Seccombe, said: “This is a massive coup for Nuneaton and the whole of Warwickshire to be hosting a stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain and it is very exciting news.
“Once again an event like this shines a global spotlight on Nuneaton and the all of the county, which is extremely positive for everyone.
“The county council and our partners have great ambitions for Nuneaton and this kind of international profile is an excellent kickstart for that programme of works.”
Warwickshire County Council has built up a relationship with Sweetspot, organisers of both the OVO Energy Tour of Britain and Women’s Tour, over the past three years.
They have successfully hosted the Warwickshire stage of the Women’s Tour, which led to the Tour of Britain coming to the county for 2018.
The event will kick-off at 11am from Nuneaton town centre and finish in Royal Leamington Spa later in the afternoon.
