Over 70 firefighters were involved in tackling a large fire at a scrap metal site in Ryton-on-Dunsmore.
A total of 12 appliances from Warwickshire, Coventry and West Midlands attended the fire at Whites of Coventry scrapyard on the London Road, A45.
At one point, flames were estimated to be 8m high.
Crews were first called to the scene at 10:05 Friday morning as cars in the yard alighted. The plume of smoke was so dense that, at one point, Coventry Airport was closed.
Cllr Andy Crump, acting portfolio for Community Protection, said.
“This was a significant incident that could have presented a serious problem. However, our crews and those of beighbouring services, tackled the blaze and limited the damage, ensuring no members of the community were put at risk.
“The potential for disruption was limited and Warwickshire’s roads were kept moving.”
Firefighters are remaining at the scene through the night to minimise the effect on the local environment.
