Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Team is running a week of free child car seat checks across the county from 25 to 29 March.
The law requires children travelling in the front or rear seat of any car, van or goods vehicle to use the correct child car seat until they are either 135cm/4ft 5in tall or 12 years old, whichever they reach first, and it’s the driver’s responsibility to ensure that children under the age of 14 years are restrained correctly.
From previous years, we know that around 80% of child car seats in Warwickshire do not fit the car, are incompatible with the child, or need some kind of adjustment, such as re-routing the seat belt or adjustment of the head restraint.
Road safety experts from Child Seat Safety Ltd have over 40 years of child seat knowledge and will be on hand to check and adjust seats and answer questions that parents or carers might have.
No booking is required. Checks are completely free and will be held at the following locations during the week:
25 March, 9.30am – 2.30pm at Asda, Chesterton Drive, Leamington Spa CV31 1YD
26 March, 8am – 4.30pm at Asda, 12 Chapel Street, Rugby CV21 3EB
27 March, 8am – 4.30pm at Asda, Newtown Road, Nuneaton CV11 4FL
28 March, 8am – 4.30pm at Waitrose, 51 Bertie Road, Kenilworth CV8 1JP
29 March, 8am – 4.30pm at Tesco, Birmingham Road, Stratford upon Avon CV37 0UA
Cllr Jeff Clarke, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning, said: ‘An incorrectly fitted or inappropriately used car seat could put a child in real danger in the event of a collision, but we understand that this can be a difficult thing for parents to check themselves. These checks provide an invaluable opportunity for people to seek reassurance that they have done everything possible to ensure the safety of children in their care.’
