Kenilworth bus changes

Town bus services which serve Kenilworth will have new routes from next month.

The 539, 540, 541 and 543 services currently financed by Warwickshire County Council will be altered from Monday 5 September, as part of changes being implemented in the bus service revision programme.

The 539 route will be rerouted to incorporate much of the current 543 route. Its route within Kenilworth will be Dalehouse Lane, Finham Road, Villiers Road, Park Hill, Adcock Drive, Holmewood Close, Park Hill, Villiers Road, Rawnsley Drive, Dencer Drive, Glasshouse Lane, Birches Lane, Farmer Ward Road, Thornby Avenue, Ashfield Road, Elmdene Road, Whitemoor Road, Spring Lane, Whateleys Drive, Priory Road, Abbey Hill, Abbey End, The Square, Abbey End, Forrest Road, Castle Road, Clinton Lane, Beehive Hill, Malthouse Lane, Castle Hill, Castle Road, Forrest Road, Abbey End, The Square, Warwick Road, Waverley Road, Priory Road, Whateleys Drive, Spring Lane, Whitemoor Road, Elmdene Road, Ashfield Road, Thornby Avenue, Farmer Ward Road, Birches Lane, Glasshouse Lane, Dencer Drive, Rawnsley Drive, Villiers Road, Park Hill, Holmewood Close, Adcock Drive, Park Hill, Villiers Road, Finham Road and Dalehouse Lane.

The 541 service around Clinton Lane and Malthouse Lane is being replaced by extending the 539 route to include this north west area of the town. The 540 service between Kenilworth and Cannon Park, via Burton Green is being withdrawn and partially replaced with a Mondays only Flexibus 233 service into Kenilworth. Burton Green will continue to have a commercially operated hourly bus service into Coventry.

The county council has to deal with a 45 per cent reduction in 2011/12 in the level of bus subsidies it pays to operators to provide services which are not commercially viable but considered socially necessary.

Cllr Peter Butlin, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport and Highways, said: “As a county council we have to deal sensibly with the significant budget reduction that is facing us. We have to make revisions to the bus network to ensure that the level of financially supported local bus services provided remains within the budget that the county council can afford.

“We have established a route for the 539 service that covers as many of the roads previously covered by the withdrawn services. Additionally, we have taken account of feedback from local residents and councillors, and have amended the route and timetable several times to see if we can accommodate as many of these needs as possible.”
