At 4:27pm Warwickshire Fire Control received an emergency call to reports of machinary on fire at 3M’s UK Ltd, Ratcliffe Road, Atherstone, two appliances from Atherstone attended. A message was received stating the incident involved a building of two storeys with first floor mezzanine flooring approximately 100 metres by 60 metres used for sandpaper manufacturing. The overheating machinary was located on the first floor mezzanine and a chemical was venting from the machinary. A Hazardous Materials and Environmental Protection Officer from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended and liaised with on site staff. Two Fire Fighters in breathing apparatus surveyed and monitored the machinary using CO2 and dry powder extinguishers, and a thermal image camera, a covering jet was set up as a precautionary measure. Crews were in attendance for approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
